Tony Khan Unsure If AEW Hits 1 Million Viewers Across Cable And HBO Max

Tony Khan comments on whether AEW programming is garnering a million viewers per show across traditional cable and the HBO Max streaming platform.

AEW recently signed a new media rights agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery. As part of that agreement, AEW Dynamite and AEW Collision are simulcast on HBO Max, in addition to their traditional cable platforms, TBS and TNT, respectively.

Following AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2025, Tony Khan was asked during a media scrum about the possibility of his shows amassing 1 million viewers across all platforms. Khan said he wasn’t sure what the official viewership count was. However, He continues to feel strongly about AEW as a powerhouse of the HBO Max Sports tab. He’s also excited about the possibility of HBO Max expanding into the pay-per-view business and how that will help AEW grow.

“I don’t know. I honestly, according to a report I saw, we may be, but I also don’t exactly know because that’s the most detail I’ve seen. All I know is that we’re one of the top sports shows. I don’t know what the NBA streaming viewership was in the past. I’m not sure what the March Madness viewership is. I don’t know the NHL streaming viewership. I can compare regular season NHL to AEW, and see, AEW has a good chance of being a very strong league in the sports tab on HBO Max. I know they’re very excited about growing into the pay-per-view business. There are going to be more opportunities to build our relationship with HBO Max and establish it as a great platform for AEW.”

AEW has announced that live pay-per-view events will be available on the HBO Max platform as soon as possible. Currently, there is no set date for the start of this strategy.

Elsewhere in the wrestling pay-per-view landscape, WWE events are slated to begin being broadcast on ESPN’s direct-to-consumer platform. This will start on September 20 with WWE Wrestlepalooza. Learn more about that here.

That event will counterprogram AEW All Out in Toronto. Learn what Tony has to say about being counter-programmed so frequently here.
