Tony Khan Explains Why He Likes To Have The AEW Continental Classic Around The Holidays

Tony Khan explains his philosophy on putting the Continental Classic during the holiday season.

For the past three years, AEW has held the Continental Classic at the end of the year, culminating at AEW Worlds End, the final pay-per-view of the year.

With the tournament being held in November and December, it falls during the holiday season where AEW tapes shows.

On the Worlds End media call, Tony Khan was asked by Jason Powell of ProWrestling.net if there was ever any thought of moving the Cotinental Classic so they wouldn’t have to tape episodes and would have the potential of more viewership not being around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“It’s really nice to have awesome programming around the holidays and if you want to have a glass half full perspective on some of the benefits when it could be a challenging time to bring viewers in, it gives an attraction to the shows and provides something strong,” he said.

Tony noted that there are more important things around the holidays, like spending time with family, but he hopes families will watch AEW.

“I love that there is awesome AEW wrestling that there is a draw for people. There is a great tradition of pro wrestling around the holidays,” he said.

Tony said that the NFL does big numbers on the holidays.

“I would love for people to want to watch AEW, potentially with their family and friends on the holidays. That is always a goal. To make these must-see episodes when there can be an incentive to watch. Try to make it a positive,” he said.

Asked if there was thought of holding a women’s Continental Classic at a different time of year to capitalize on potential viewership, Tony said that was an interesting thought.

“I really like the formula we have here. There is a lot of things we could potentially try as far as the scheduling of the tournament. In this case, I do like having the Continental Classic around the holiday season. I think it provides engaging and interesting wrestling content to follow around a beautiful time of year. I always associate the holidays with pro wrestling. I think it adds something really special this time of year,” he said.

The final matches of the round robin portion of the Continental Classic will be held on AEW Dynamite on 34th Street on Christmas Eve and AEW Christmas Collision on Christmas.
