Sareee Wanted To Be Presented As ‘Cool & Strong’ In WWE, Says They Turned Her Into An Anime Character

Sareee donned the character when NXT 2.0 launched.
As a part of WWE NXT’s transition into the NXT 2.0 program, the show became character-driven. One of the talents on the roster at the time who underwent a shift on-screen is Sareee.
She was known in WWE as ‘Sarray’ and while NXT 2.0 was in play, she took on an anime persona, and for her matches, she would transition into the fighter version of herself. Sareee sat down with Jaguar Yokota for a chat on her YouTube channel.
She stated that she wanted to be viewed as ‘cool and strong’ in WWE, but they turned her into an anime character (translation via @meraWRESTLING on X).
“When I went to WWE in America, I didn’t want to be a villain so much as a strong wrestler. I wanted to be seen as cool and strong, but instead, they made me play an anime character in a sailor uniform.”
She was with WWE for several years before departing in 2023.
Present day, Sareee is competing in various independent promotions in Japan in addition to running her own Sareee-ISM events. She’s also the reigning IWGP Women’s Champion.
