Rob Van Dam Expected John Cena To Tap Out In His Final Match, Wanted The Bout To Go Another 20 Minutes

Rob Van Dam expected John Cena to tap out.

Fans are still up in arms about the finish to John Cena’s final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event, which saw Cena tap out to Gunther’s signature sleeper hold.

Speaking with TMZ’s Inside The Ring podcast for a new interview, Van Dam said that he expected Cena to tap out in the match.

“I expected it, I guess. I was just kinda bummed that it was over and so final at that moment, there’s no going back. They rang the bell, that match is over. It’s just like, you know it’s coming but it doesn’t make that moment any more enjoyable or whatever. I kind of was disappointed just cause I would’ve liked it to go another 20 minutes, I was having fun. Otherwise, I kind of expected that to happen.”

Van Dam was then asked about attending the show.

“It felt awesome. I was honored, always am when they invite me to be there and show me on camera. It spreads a lot of joy in the world, at least from my perspective. I couldn’t tell being there that the pop was as loud as it must have been because as soon as I started hearing the reaction or reading it on text messages, I was like, ‘Oh really? Cool.’ I couldn’t really hear as well, especially not comparatively to the past. It was awesome. Really cool.”
