Maven Reflects On Final WWE Match, ‘In Hindsight, I Didn’t See All The Negatives’

Maven reflects on his final WWE match.

From 2001 until 2005, Maven was a WWE Superstar. His final match took place on the June 20, 2005, episode of WWE Heat. Maven would team with the Heart Throbs, Antonio, and Romeo. They lost to the team of Rosey, Hurricane, and Val Venis. Maven even wound up taking the pin in that match.

These days, Maven has made a strong comeback, talking about his career on YouTube. In his latest YouTube video, he reflected on his final match and his mindset at the time. Even though Maven didn’t feel like he would be fired eight days later, he was. Now, he’s saying that he can see the writing on the wall with the benefit of hindsight.

In addition to things like taking the pin in his final match, Maven reflects on some mistakes he made, such as leaving the show venue to train off-site when he would learn that he wasn’t being used on a particular show. He says that, looking back, he can see how that made him look unreliable. Additionally, he believes that the most significant factor was his complacency and lack of eagerness to advance up the ladder.

“Now, there were a lot of positives during this time, but with hindsight being 20/20, I didn’t see all the negatives that would lead to this being my last match. For instance, on days when we were there for a Monday Night Raw or a SmackDown, if I wasn’t utilized in the show, I would go off-site to get a workout in. We all know, ‘Out of sight, out of mind.’ If they start looking for you throughout the arena and they can’t find you, that tells them that you’re unreliable, that you aren’t there for the greater good of the show, that you’re a selfish person, that you’re only there for yourself. I asked once if I could go off-site to work out on a day when I wasn’t going to be used, and the answer was yes. From that moment on, I abused that privilege. Looking back, I wish I just would have stayed where I was.

“By far the biggest reason was that I wasn’t bettering myself. I was content with progressing up the ladder at the rate I was, and I wasn’t trying to speed up that progression any. I should have shown everyone there that I was going to do everything in my power to be the best I could be, and I just didn’t.”

In 2005, Maven was given the opportunity to challenge Shelton Benjamin for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. He has said that there was talk about putting the belt on him, but he declined, saying he wasn’t ready. Learn more about that here
