John Cena Says Fighting Himself In The Firefly Fun House Was His Toughest Match

John Cena discusses fighting Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Fun House. He describes the avant-garde experience from WrestleMania 36 as the toughest match of his career. That match took place during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, making it part of the only WrestleMania ever held without an audience.

The match would see John Cena relive his career in a nightmarish universe where everything goes wrong. He was forced to confront his morality, even briefly turning heel during the segment, and, in the end, created something memorable for the WWE Universe during a time of uncertainty in the world.

Speaking at FanExpo in Boston (via Justin Barrasso of Undisputed), he named that match as his toughest, simply because he had to fight himself during that encounter.

“It’s the match I had in the Firefly Fun House,” said Cena, referencing a match that took place without a crowd during the pandemic. “The reason that opponent was tough–and I know it was against Bray Wyatt–was because that was more or less a match against me. I’ll say that was my toughest match.”

John Cena would actually turn heel during his retirement tour in 2025, but with less than a dozen appearances left before his final night as a WWE Superstar, he is back to being a babyface.

Bray Wyatt sadly passed away in 2023. Read tributes to him from his peers at this link.
