Cody Rhodes Recounts Wrestlers Babysitting Him, Feels Stone Cold Steve Austin Was Only One Who Took It Seriously

Rhodes shares a story about Steve Austin.

A clip from Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes’ appearance on Pardon My Take was posted onto social media, during which Rhodes spoke about the wrestlers who would watch him while his father was handling creative duties with WCW.

One of the wrestlers who watched him was Stone Cold Steve Austin, then known as ‘Stunning’ Steve Austin. Rhodes added that he felt Austin was the only wrestler who took the task seriously.

“‘Stunning’ Steve Austin from WCW was, on occasion, my babysitter. On occasion. At Center Stage in Atlanta, and he was the nicest guy about it ever because he didn’t really do a lot of babysitting, as much as he’d sit me in the locker room and be like, ‘Hey, you want a soda?’ ‘Yeah, sure, Steve.’ ‘Alright. Stay here though. Don’t go anywhere. My match is next and then I’ll be back.’ It was really basic, just keep an eye, because my dad was running the show at the time. So when he was showing up at WWE and became the man, and had this (WWE Championship), I thought, that’s Steve. That’s my guy. I was with Steve early on.

At Center Stage in Atlanta for WCW, at The Omni, at all the local — UTC Chattanooga, all these local WCW shows — he’d always get me somebody to watch me, but Steve I felt like was one of the only ones that really took it serious. I remember Sherri Martel one time was watching me. She was not watching me. Ricky Steamboat stitched my eye up one time because I fell down the steps and busted my eye. He didn’t want my dad to know about it. But how is he not gonna know about it when I have stitches and a black eye? Yeah, I had a fun group. Harley Race, where he was just whittling a stick with a pocket knife and the scariest man I’ve ever seen in my life. So they were unique babysitters.”

Rhodes is in the midst of his second reign as Undisputed WWE Champion. Coming up on the schedule for Rhodes is that he’ll be competing in the men’s WarGames match at Survivor Series alongside The Usos (Jimmy Uso & Jey Uso) and WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk.
