Channing Tatum Thinks It’s Unfortunate ‘The Smashing Machine’ Released The Same Weekend As Taylor Swift, ‘Taylor Is Taylor’

“The Smashing Machine” premiered in theaters on October 3, garnering only $6 million at the box office for the opening weekend. The weekend was topped by Taylor Swift, whose movie-album combo “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” made $34.1 million.

The Rock wrote on social media that you can’t control the box office, but you can control your performance.

Appearing on the Ariel Helwani Show, Channing Tatum was asked about The Rock’s comments.

“There is absolute truth there. This is a game, this thing we get to do. We have one of the best jobs on the planet. We get to play the highest stakes make-believe game in the world. What I’ve learned is, I’ve done movies where I’m like, ‘I want to do this movie because I think it’s going to be successful,’ and that was the intention. Then, the movie isn’t successful or doesn’t turn out well. It’s hard to make a movie, much less a good movie. A good movie is almost impossible to make. What I’ve learned is, the experience of doing the film, even if they never come out or make a dollar, you better have enjoyed that time in your life you spent and whatever sacrifices you made. We’re privileged and lucky enough to be able to pick our jobs and it’s a luxury. It’s still work and it takes time and it’s hard at times. That movie, specifically, it’s unfortunate that Taylor Swift came out on that weekend and it’s kind of unfair. I don’t care if you’re even The Rock. Taylor is Taylor. You’re not going to be able to stop that. It’s an unmovable object. I thought it was unfortunate. I don’t even look at it as a failure,” he said.

Elsewhere during the interview, Tatum commented on his friendship with Kevin Nash. You can find his comments here.
