Bryan Danielson: Because Of An ‘Unfortunate Incident Backstage,’ I Got To Have An Incredible Strap Match With Ricky Saints

Danielson said he was not supposed to be wrestling.
The backstage scuffle between CM Punk and Jack Perry at AEW All In 2023 is well-documented. Footage of the fight was shown on an episode of AEW Dynamite in 2024.
The Punk-Perry situation was referenced by Bryan Danielson during his stage show at Starrcast (video via All Elite Hub). He stated that because of an ‘unfortunate incident’ backstage, he got to have a Strap match against Ricky Saints, f.k.a. Ricky Starks, at AEW All Out 2023.
Danielson was not supposed to be wrestling as he was recovering from a broken arm that he suffered in June of that year. Danielson shared that it was his idea to do a Strap match.
“And then, because I missed that (All In 2023), and then there was an unfortunate incident backstage, I got to have an incredible Strap match with Ricky Starks when I wasn’t even supposed to be wrestling (he laughed).
To be fair, my dumbass suggested it. He (Tony Khan) didn’t say it this way. This is the way I framed it in my mind. We’re kind of in a pickle here, and I said, ‘Oh, what could I do with my arm in the shape that it’s in right now? I can do a Strap match.’”
The following year at All Out, Danielson defended the AEW World Championship against Jack Perry. Perry has not wrestled since the Wrestle Dynasty event in January.
