Bret Hart: Triple H Was Going To Pin Me And Destroy Me In Germany Because He Had Clout, Which Tells You What A Piece Of Shit He Was

Bret Hart and Triple H only wrestled a handful of times during their careers, but their history will always be linked through Bret’s rivalry with Shawn Michaels and the Montreal Screwjob.

In February 1997, Hart and Triple H clashed on an episode of WWE Raw in Germany. The match ended with Triple H winning by DQ, but that wasn’t the original finish.

“I wrestled him a couple of times. He was always trying to beat me. We did Monday Night Raw in Germany, and he was part of the booking now. He was in the booking committee with Vince and Jerry Brisco and all these guys. I get to Germany, which is one of my biggest markets ever. There was never a star in Germany like I was,” Bret said at the Inside The Ropes live show with Kenny McIntosh.

Bret told the story of how Vince McMahon told him in 2010 that Germany was a market WWE never recovered after Bret left, which spoke to how important and popular Bret was in the country.

“I get in the dressing room and Triple H is beating me; 1, 2, 3, in the middle of the ring. They kind of cornered me in the dressing room. Triple H is staring at me. [Brisco speaking], ‘This is what you’re doing. Triple H is gonna go over.’ I listened to them and I was like, ‘I want to talk to Vince. I’m not doing anything until I talk to Vince.’ I never refused to lose to anybody, except for Shawn at Survivor Series. They put me in a room with Vince and I said, ‘Why would you beat me in Germany? It’s a country where I’m super over. Why would you beat me with a guy who is not over? Why would you beat me in the middle of the ring, and I’m wrestling Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 a week from now? You’re going to beat me on Raw, pin me in the middle of the ring, and then you want me to wrestle Austin and do what?’ Vince looked like somebody hit him with a sledgehammer. He goes, ‘You’re right. We have to change it.’ He realized they can’t beat me before I wrestled Steve. You could see Triple H turn white. He didn’t get to beat me. He had already mapped it out in his head that he was going to pin me and destroy me in Germany because he had the clout, which tells you what kind of piece of shit he was. I foiled him, temporarily. He was out to get me,” stated Bret.

Elsewhere during the show, Bret said that he wishes Triple H was in the room when he punched Vince at Survivor Series 1997. You can find his full comments here.
