Big Kon Says Sgt. Slaughter Found Him In Wrestling

Big Kon says Sgt. Slaughter found him in wrestling.
The Ascension was active in WWE from 2011 to 2019. During that time, they won the NXT Tag Team Championship and had the longest reign in the title’s history.
Speaking on Rewind Recap Relive for a recent interview, both members of The Ascension discussed their time in wrestling. Big Kon revealed that he was doing a landscaping job for Sgt. Slaughter, but he didn’t know who he was.
During a conversation, Slaughter asked Kon if he was interested in pro-wrestling, and that’s how he started in the business.
“I don’t have like an incredible story at that point, other than the fact that Sgt. Slaughter found me. That was how I got into the business. I’m doing landscaping for the guy, and my buddy’s like, ‘Hey, man. You’ll never believe whose house this is.’ I was like, ‘I really don’t give a shit as long as my check gets cashed.’
That was all that mattered at that point.
I was a big G.I. Joe fan, and then he came walking out, my mouth dropped to the ground. I was just like, ‘Holy crap, this is Sarge.’ He’s like, ‘Have you ever thought about getting into professional wrestling or becoming a professional wrestler?’ I was like, ‘Honestly, no.’ I never thought about it, but wrestling always bonded my family because we always got the pay-per-views, and it would be an all out fight between my cousins and me and my uncles… like it was just a battle of testosterone for the most part.
But it always gave me that camaraderie and that bond of family, so I gave it a shot, and I met a gentleman by the name of Rusty Brooks, who has passed sadly, but he trained Gangrel, and that was how my whole thing started.”
In another interview with Fightful last year, Jesus Rodriguez also discussed his time with The Ascension. Fans can read his comments here.
