Athena Wishes She Was A Little More Selfish As Ember Moon In WWE

Athena reflects on her time as Ember Moon in WWE.

Ember Moon was a staple of the WWE NXT brand during her time with WWE, but although she garnered fan support when she transitioned to the main roster, she never achieved championship success there. In AEW, Athena has achieved considerable success. She’s the anchor of AEW’s sister promotion, ROH, and has made history as the longest-reigning champion in that company’s history.

Recently, Athena appeared as a guest on the Battleground Podcast. When asked what message she would send to her former persona, the “forever Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion” simply said she is grateful for her time as Ember Moon but wishes she had been more selfish during that phase of her career.

“I feel like a lot of where I am now is because of Ember. I don’t regret anything. I wish I was a little bit more selfish for myself in that moment. But I prided myself on always being a team player, always trying to be for the match versus for myself. I think that’s the only thing I would change. Is I would be a little bit more selfish, but at that same time, I wouldn’t be the forever, oh, eight champion. Without Ember Moon in that journey that I had there, I wouldn’t be comfortable with being who I am and presenting that on a TV platter, if you will, if it wasn’t for Ember Moon and me trying to hide behind the mask. I love that character. I put a lot of heart and soul into the creative for that character.

“So, I’ll never say never, when it comes to Ember Moon, as far as taking inspiration from that character, or like, ‘Oh, I should have done it this way, or I should have done that way,’ because that’s a part of my journey in who I am today. So like, I said, it’s weird to go back and say, ‘Oh, like, I should have done this. I should have that.’ I just wish I was a little bit more selfish. I think that’s the best thing I can say,”

Athena has the chance to be selfish and capture even more gold when she takes on Toni Storm for the Women’s World Championship of AEW at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
