8 Teams Enter, 1 Team Wins The Gold: My Predictions For The AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship Tournament

Who'll Become The First AEW Women's World Tag Team Champions?

History will be made this coming Wednesday Night on AEW Dynamite when the tournament kicks off to crown the first ever AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship. Eight teams will be competing for the gold, with those pairings being Queen Aminata/Jamie Hayter, Sisters Of Sin (Skye Blue & Julia Hart), Babes Of Wrath (Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron), Mercedes Mone/Athena, Alex Windsor/Riho, Toni Storm/Mina Shirakawa, Megan Bayne/Penelope Ford, and TayJay (Tay Conti & Anna Jay). The first-round pairings have been announced. The field is set. Now, let’s take a look at how I predict this tournament will play out as we answer the question of “what team will become the first ever AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions?”

First Round Match-Ups

Queen Aminata & Jamie Hayter vs. Sister Of Sin (Julia Hart & Skye Blue)

If there is one theme that will be playing itself out throughout the opening round of the tournament and possibly through the whole tournament, it is the fact that five of the eight teams in the tournament are thrown together for the sake of the tournament. One of those thrown together teams is Queen Aminata and Jamie Hayter, who have been friends and rivals throughout their respective AEW tenures. The Sisters Of Sin have been teaming together for over a year, although separate injuries to Julia Hart and Skye Blue over the last few years have limited their in-ring time. With that being said, Aminata and Hayter did best Hart and Blue in a recent 8-woman tag team match, but the teamwork edge still lies with the Sisters Of Sin.

Prediction: Upsets happen in every tournament and this one is no different, Hayter and Aminata move onto the semi-finals.

Mercedes Mone & Athena vs. Babes Of Wrath (Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron)

When I started examining the bracket for this tournament, there was no match that was easier to predict than this one. The Babes Of Wrath will bring the energy and charisma to the match, but Mercedes Mone and Athena hold an unbelievable 13 championships together (12 for Mone and 1 for Athena). The pairing of Mone and Athena is easily the super team of the tournament and there may be no stopping them on their journey towards history.

Prediction: The Babes Of Wrath are two of my personal favorites in AEW, but Mone and Athena move on towards adding two more belts to their collection.

Alex Windsor & Riho vs. Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa

International flare is in the air for this first round matchup when Alex Windsor & Riho join up for action against Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa. Riho was once the stalwart of the AEW Women’s Division, but her time at the top has seemingly come to an end, whether it was due to visa issues, injuries, or other misfortune. Windsor is extremely talented and her time in AEW will come, but not as part of a makeshift team with the former AEW Women’s World Champion. Storm and Shirakawa are at a different stage in their AEW careers, as both recently lost their titles (Storm to Kris Statlander and Shirakawa to Mone) and are looking to rebound.

Prediction: The best way to recover from losing championships is to win back some championships, Storm and Shirakawa advance to get one step closer to becoming champions again.

Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford vs. TayJay (Tay Conti & Anna Jay)

Of the four first round matches in this tournament, the one that is causing me the most problems with making a pick is this bout between Megan Bayne/Penelope Ford and TayJay. Bayne, outside of a loss to Toni Storm, has been destroying just about everybody put in her path and Ford has been a member of the AEW roster since day one, but has yet to achieve any real success. TayJay are the longest tenured women’s tag team in AEW, but neither has been able to gain championship gold thus far in their promotional tenures. No matter who walks away victorious in this encounter, I expect this match to be one of the better matches in the tournament as a whole.

Prediction: TayJay has been in a unit longer than their opposition, but nobody outside of Toni Storm has been able to stop Bayne, so Bayne and Ford advance to the second round.

Semi-Final Matches

Queen Aminata & Jamie Hayter vs. Mercedes Mone & Athena

We start off the second-round action with a pair of makeshift teams as Queen Aminata and Jamie Hayter face Mercedes Mone and Athena. Mone and Athena have had their respective ways with Aminata and Hayter in singles action and I do not expect things to change now that they are facing off in tag team competition.

Prediction: Queen Aminata & Jamie Hayter could become a force as a tag team down the line, but Mercedes Mone & Athena are the force of the present and they will advance to the finals.

Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa vs. Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford

Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa continue their hunt to become champions again when they face off with Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford in the semi-finals of the tournament. Bayne’s future as a champion seems to be down the road of a singles competitor and while I am a longtime fan of Ford back to her independent wrestling days, Storm and Shirakawa are not going down in the second round.

Prediction: Megan Bayne’s Achilles heel in AEW thus far has been Toni Storm and while I don’t expect to see Bayne take the fall here, Ford will as Storm and Shirakawa make it to the finals.

Final Round Match

Mercedes Mone & Athena vs. Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa

The amount of great action these four have put forth in 2025, especially against each other, will make for a great final round match as Mercedes Mone, Athena, Toni Storm, and Mina Shirakawa will all share the same ring, with one team becoming the first ever AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions. Whenever a promotion introduces a new championship, the match that crowns the champion(s) has to be a classic to show just how important those titles are. When it comes to this bout, I expect nothing less than a five-star effort between all four competitors. Sadly, no matter who is facing who in the finals, one team will become the champions and the other will be left to reflect on what could’ve been.

Prediction: The one thing about being hungry for championships, especially in the case of Mercedes Mone and Athena is that they will always want more. That means that Mone will one day want to go after Athena’s championship and Athena will want to go after Mone’s various belts. The super-team falls apart in the final round due to their individual aspirations, leading the team of Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa to win and call themselves the first ever AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions.
