Ricky Hatton has passed away.
The former world champion boxer was active between 1997 and 2012, winning titles in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions. Earlier this year, Hatton had announced that he would be returning to the ring for a bout in December of this year.
Hatton was found dead in his home in Hyde on September 14th, and in a statement by the Greater Manchester police, they noted that his death was not being treated as suspicious.
“Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6.45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
Hatton would box with some of the world’s best, meeting Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in 2007 and 2009 respectively. Ricky had last fought professionally back in 2012, but had since stepped back into the ring for a 2022 exhibition bout.
Throughout his career, Hatton would be open about his mental health struggles and other issues surrounding his boxing career, with a 2023 documentary shining an even brighter light on one of Britain’s greatest boxing exports.
Hatton would also host an episode of WWE Monday Night RAW in 2009.
