Shelly Martinez: I Didn’t Realize How Sexual Ariel Was, No Wonder My Family Wasn’t Cool With My WWE Character

Shelly Martinez felt her vampire gimmick was too sexual.
Speaking with SoCal Val on The Velvet Ropes, Shelly said she didn’t realize how sexual her Ariel gimmick was on ECW back in 2006.
Shelly thinks doing her hair and makeup herself contributed a lot to the overall perceived provocative image of the gimmick.
“I did my own hair and makeup because the way WWE was, you got to be more over to be able to get in that chair with the hair and makeup lady. Otherwise, you’re doing it on your own, and it’s fine because I felt comfortable doing that. I was always one of these models where when they do my hair and makeup, I go in the bathroom and I do it the way I want it. So for me, it was awesome.
I didn’t realize how important getting ready was to really setting that mood to be Ariel because – something that’s a newer discovery for me, I’m talking about only in the last few years – I didn’t realize how sexual Ariel was. I had no idea. I was just doing my role.
Like I pulled from Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly from House of a 1000 Corpses, Lily Munster, of course, and then my own flair. So, to me, I knew the assignment and knew it well, and I was doing it. So, it’s so crazy that like when I look back, I’m like ‘No wonder my family wasn’t cool with like my WWE character’ cause it was so sexual and I had no idea and I think a lot of that – the seeds getting planted – was putting that makeup on, doing that hair. I almost wonder if it would have been different if I would’ve been sitting in that makeup chair getting my hair and makeup done. I probably would have the same essence, but the energy going into it was a whole process.”
