Kevin Von Erich explains that he named his son after a South African War Hero.

The Von Erich family is one of the pro wrestling world’s biggest wrestling families, with the family continuing their legacy in 2025 with Marshall and Ross Von Erich being active wrestlers, with their father Kevin still remaining a big supporter of the pair’s careers.

While speaking on Hey! (EW), Kevin Von Erich, Ross and Marshall spoke about how Marshall was born in a town named Marshall, leading to RJ City asking if that was why he had his name. Kevin revealed that he actually named Marshall after a war hero who saved a friend of his’ life.

“If y’all knew the truth, it’s not a cool story, and it kind of is, I guess. But I have a friend named Steve Simpson who was with the South African Army, and they were having a war against Angola, I believe it was. He had a lieutenant named Cardinal Marshall, and he saved that whole helicopter man, saved my friend Steve’s life. He was a heroic son of a gun. These guys have got hero written all over them, I’m telling you.”

Elsewhere in another recent interview, Kevin spoke about his sons feelings on their mythic family curse. You can read more about that here.
