Kurt Angle: Undertaker Was So Adaptable, He Could Even Have A Five-Star Luch Libre Wrestling Match

Kurt Angle discusses The Undertaker’s in-ring versatility.

In 2006, Kurt Angle faced The Undertaker at WWE No Way Out in a match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. It was the last time they ever wrestled on pay-per-view, but the match was also considered one of the best in Undertaker’s career up to that point.

Speaking on a WWE Retrospective video, Angle said he was honored to be part of that match and praised Undertaker’s ability to work any style.

This match was surprisingly incredible because there’s a size difference here. Undertaker is a big guy, and I’m more of a thoroughbred wrestler, and to have the match we had, the chemistry, the submission trade-offs, the false finishes that we had. This match was so special. It told such an amazing story. This is why it’s one of my top three favorite matches of all time,” he said. “It showed that anybody is capable of having good matches, whether you’re a big guy or a little guy or you’re in the middle. It doesn’t matter who you’re wrestling; you’re all capable of having incredible matches. This shows that we were very capable of doing that for Undertaker to be a 300-pound giant, seven-foot tall, and be able to do what he did in the ring that night? It was nothing short of amazing.

“The Undertaker wasn’t supposed to do that stuff. He wasn’t supposed to be a submission-type wrestler,” Angle continued. “He was supposed to be ‘The Deadman’ that walked around and Chokeslammed people. For him to show his versatility here as The Undertaker, I thought was incredible. It showed that he had many levels to his wrestling. He proved that that night right here, he proved that he could do any type of wrestling match. He could even have a five-star Lucha Libre wrestling match. I mean, that’s how adaptable Undertaker was. I was just proud to be a part of it.”

That was one of Kurt Angle’s last pay-per-view matches as a WWE Superstar. He would leave for TNA Wrestling later in 2006 and have many other classic matches against the likes of AJ Styles, Sting, and Samoa Joe.

Elsewhere in the video, Angle reflected on his first match back in WWE in 2017. It would be a special match where he teamed with Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley) as a fill-in member of The Shield. Read his comments on that match here.
