Tracing his early days in Sao Paulo’s favelas – which gave him the nickname “do Bronx” – the untitled feature is being produced by Eduardo Ferro of 405 Films and will be shot in Las Vegas and Brazil
Los Angeles, CA (June 17, 2025): Filmmaker Eduardo Ferro of 405 Films has acquired the life rights of Brazilian MMA champion Charles Oliveira, a fan favorite known for combining swagger and humility, technical mastery and unpredictability, and loved for his underdog history.
The feature film will dramatize his rise from battling life-threatening health issues in the impoverished Vicente de Carvalho neighborhood in the town of Guarujá, São Paulo to domination of the Brazilian Ju-Jitsu world before becoming a champion in the most important MMA league in the world, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
As a child, Oliveira was actually ordered by doctors not play sports because of a heart murmur. He has beat some of the biggest names in the sport including Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. He fights to regain his lightweight championship title in a headlining match against Ilia Toporia at UFC 317 in June.
Beverly Hills-based Ferro will bring his experience making films in both Brazil and the U.S. to the project. Previously, Ferro produced and directed the action and suspense short The Game Masters, in which a young foreign actress in Los Angeles discovers a sex trafficking ring. The film was nominated for Best Film at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival in 2019.“It’s an honor to get to make a film about Charles Oliveira,” said Ferro. “Brazil produces many combat sports athletes but he truly is ‘a lion among lions.” His wild success in the face of such adversity, and the way he connects the culture of his homeland with the culture of the United States makes this story truly inspiring. I’m grateful for his trust in me to tell this story – and the challenge to honor its authenticity.”
Ferro has also written, directed and produced many videos including one for the song Fênix by rapper Felp 22 of the group Cacife Clandistino. Functioning as a short film as well as music video, it delves into themes of returning to gritty streets of your hometown in ways that will serve Ferro well when shooting in Vincente de Carvalho.
“From the favelas of Guarujá to the bright lights of the Octagon, this has always been about heart, faith, and never giving up,” said Charles Oliviera. “Eduardo and 405 Films are the right team to bring the story to life.”
In addition, Ferro has experience with the challenges of filming elite-level combat sports
and produced the 405 Films bio pic O Faixa-Preta: A verdade história de Fernando Tererê about the Brazilian Ju-Jitsu World Champion, a hit in Latin America currently available on MAX, Amazon Prime and Apple TV.Ferro added, “Charles’ story will be more than a movie — like his whole life, this will be a message to every kid out there who feels like the world forgot them: your time is coming. ‘The champion has a name’– and now the world will know how it happened.”
Oliveira is set to challenge IliaTopuria for the UFC Lightweight Title at UFC 317.
