The Wrestling Perspective is one of Fightful's newest shows. It is hosted by Lars Frederiksen of the Punk Rock Band "Rancid" and Dennis Farrell. This week, they interviewed New Japan Pro Wrestling’s David Finlay, ahead of his match against Bobby Fish at NJPW’s Battle in the Valley PPV event this Saturday.David mentioned how his career has been going since Juice Robinson left New Japan for AEW. He said that he’s really enjoying himself, he had the opportunity to participate in the G1 and main event, a PPV with Will Ospreay. He talked about how he’s had some big matchups, but has fallen short and believes he will get a big win within the year.When asked about his thoughts about seeing New Japan’s presence grow in the United States. He says it has been cool, slowly, but surely.When asked by Dennis Farrell about chasing a title instead of a contract. David said I want to be a world champion. He also said he is a 4th generation wrestler, wrestling is ingrained in him. He mentioned that nobody in his family has been a world champion, and that is something he wants to do. David said his goal since day one has been to be the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. That would be the pinnacle for him. He says until he does that he is not crossing any other bridges. Finlay talked about when he goes into a match, he represents the Finley family. He mentions he brings out the shillelagh now, because it's his insurance policy.He explained why he started leaning into his family heritage regarding his character. He was asked if he wanted to avoid his Dad’s [Fit Finlay] legacy. He said when he started wrestling at the age of 19. The last thing he wanted to do was be his dad. He said he was adamant it was not happening. However, he became a version of his Dad, he said.Finlay feels like he has just scratched the surface as far as using the shillelagh and incorporate his heritage into his gimmick. He also mentioned that finding the balance of who he is and also representing the family’s name has been a struggle. He said there is a certain expectation when you have a name. He used the Hart and Mysterio family as an example, and said it comes with the territory.
